What is a gerund?
A gerund is a noun made from a verb. To make a gerund, you add "ing" to the verb.
For example:

Form a group of students (3 to 4) to analyze a video about the advantages and disadvantages of technology nowadays.
You need to value if the use of technology has been the best thing for the wellbeing of human beings? And writing a letter to an influential organization asking for help, to minimize the bad impact (if there is one) that the technology is producing on the community. You need to present to the class.
Tips to do the task
·
You need to choose a video you
would like to talk about from the followings:
What is Technology and
some of its Advantage and Disadvantages: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6CWsLR5SuyU
Technology Advantages
and Disadvantages, Both Black and white interface of technology: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_o2XJnBftg
Advantages and
Disadvantages of Technology: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Be7tVPZzt0
· After watching the video, it is advisable to discuss and write down the advantages and disadvantages of the Technology
· The group needs to name five advantages and five disadvantages of the technology and explain each of them.
·
The group needs to choose a
disadvantage of a specific type of technology and thinking what can be done to
minimize the bad impact that the technology is causing to this specific sector,
for example, you need to choose a disadvantage, such as, the world pollution,
or something else.

is using new technology.
why you are asking them to support your group.
The plan you have is to minimize the bad impact that the technology used by the factory is causing to the community.
For
example:
My
opinion is that I am not sure about the fact, if the technology is the best
thing for the world, as U believe that it is good for the human progress but
on the other hand, it is true that the use of technology in different
situations is not good, for instances, the internet is an open box where
children are exposed to cyberbullying or adults can be a fraud. |
If you cannot attend the synchronic
meeting you need to explain it to the members of your family and record it
while doing it.

Technology is all around you. It has always been a part of your daily life. Yet Could you define technology? Before I tell you what technology means, take out a piece of paper and write a paragraph.
What do you think technology is?
1. _________________________________________________________
2. _________________________________________________________
Structuration:
It is time to read and find out what is the technology and something else more about it.
TECHNOLOGY
we can describe
technology as products and processes used to simplify our daily lives.
We use technology to extend our abilities, making people the most crucial part of any technological system. Technology is also an application of science used to
solve problems. But it is vital to know that technology
and science are different subjects which work
hand-in-hand to accomplish specific tasks or solve problems. We apply technology in
almost everything we do in our daily lives; we use technology at work, we use technology
for communication, transportation,
learning, manufacturing,
securing data, scaling
businesses and so much more.
Technology is human knowledge that involves tools, materials, and systems. The application of technology typically results in products. If
technology is well applied, it benefits humans, but the opposite is true if used for malicious reasons. Technology is dynamic; it keeps on improving because our needs and demands for technology keep on changing. We have moved from the industrial age (industrial revolution) to an information age. During the industrial age, companies with large sums of capital had the potential of employing expensive technological tools to gain the competitive advantage; small businesses had less potential because they could not afford expensive manufacturing or processing technology tools. However, advancement in technology has
created a new economic environment that depends on information, and that is
what we call the ‘’INFORMATION AGE’’. The
information age provides a different work environment, and this has helped
small businesses gain a position in highly competitive markets. |
Exercise 1:
After
the reading the text, please make a list of unknown words you find in the text.
Explaining
in your own words the meaning of each of them.
UNKOWN WORDS |

of
the session and check if you were right.
Rewrite the paragraph if you think you need to give a better
explanation.

The present
perfect is a verb tense that is used to show that an action has taken
place once or many times before now.
PRESENT PERFECT
The present
perfect is a verb tense that is used to show that an action has taken
place once or many times before now. As it is shown below.
How the present perfect is formed?
Subject + have/has + main verb (past participle)
The past participle of some verbs:
Example: The
technology has used all the scientific information to develop the latest devices.
When do we use the present perfect:
We
use the present perfect to say that an action happened at an unspecified time
before now.
The
exact time is not important. We CAN use the present perfect with unspecific
expressions such as:
ever, never, once, many times, several times,
before, so far, already, yet, etc.
There are basically three situations that we use
present perfect. It is always used to talk about an action or
event in the past that has some kind of connection to
now.
1.
To talk about life experience (I have
the memory now)
I have been to Paris.
I have never drunk whisky.
2.

The
technology has existed since ancient times.
People has watched TV since it was discovered.
3.
The result of the action is important or
clear now
The

The
boy has broken his arm
Exercise: Now give 3 examples where you used the present perfect accordingly.

The Gamers Once two boys named Alex and Jack both loved playing Call of Duty. One day they were playing it so much that they didn’t
notice a strong force pushing them towards the TV screen… Suddenly they found themselves in a large room full of people and deadly weapons. Then it hit them they had been sucked into a game but not just any game Call of Duty. Then a tall man came up to them and said, “Gear
up boys”. They did as they were told and geared up. Alex chose two laser blasters and a sword; Jack took a grenade gun and a rocket launcher. The doors to the arena opened and they were ready for it. Soldier after soldier streamed out of the iron gates like a river going downhill. There were already people in the arena that Alex and Jack thought were the other team. The arena was full of buildings and shelters. In the middle of the arena, there was a giant countdown to zero. When it hit zero
Alex and Jack ran to the nearest fort where they defended for the whole game!
Their team won. Now Alex and Jackson knew they had to figure how to get home. They
tried to remember what happened when they were playing but all they could
remember was a strong force pushing them forward. A few years had passed now and the boys were helping an injured soldier
“We need to get him to a medic!” said Alex. But then the game ended and they went to their room in the building. In their room, they had countless medals and trophies but in the middle of the room, there was something different. It was a purple light that looked like a portal but after a few seconds, they saw shadows appearing. The shadows suddenly turned into zombies… One night they met in the corridor and headed towards the now-called portal room. They met a guard along the way he got very curious so they Tasered him when they got to the room it seemed as though the moon was shining straight onto the portal. They counted down”
3,2,1,” and they jumped in. |

Step 1, Exploration:.
People use Piercing and tattoos as another way to express themselves It seems that as many young adults are getting older, they're having a greater need to express their individuality and to show who they really are. Moreover, piercings and tattoos have been around for thousands of years now, being used to express religion by patterns and symbols.
Much alike, people get tattoos that express their interests by getting quotes from their favorite songs, a movement that has been important (such as Me-too) and many other things. Piercings, like tattoos, can be plain, dainty, bold or eye-catching; there are many types of piercings and each of those piercings have different names and has a distinctive style of jewelry. Virtually everyone is able to get a piercing in any place that they would like in any placement, though some hurt more than others (of course)
A tattoo is a permanent mark or design made on your skin with pigments
inserted through pricks into the skin's top layer. Typically, the tattoo artist
uses a hand-held machine that acts much like a sewing machine, with one or more
needles piercing the skin repeatedly. With every puncture, the needles insert
tiny ink droplets.
The process — which is
done without anesthetics — causes a small amount of bleeding and slight to
potentially significant pain. And it could cause some health problems such as
allergic reactions, skin infections, bloodborne diseases like hepatitis B and
C among others.
Piercings might be more common than ever, but don't take piercing
lightly. Potential risks and complications include: allergic reactions, skin
infections and scars, as well as keloids, which are an overgrowth of scar
tissue, bloodborne diseases and tearing or trauma or specific to the tongue
piercing, damage to teeth and gums, and difficulty chewing, swallowing and
breathing

Grammar club:
Please, observe the following examples:
1. I wouldn’t be happy
if my friends forgot my birthday
(No estaría contento si mis amigos olvidaran mi cumpleaños)
2. If I didn´t live here, I would like to live in
England.
(Si no viviese aquí, me gustaría vivir en Inglaterra)
3. If there were more factories there would be
less unemployment.
(Si hubiese más fábricas habría menos desempleo)
Activity 1: write two sentences using the first and second conditional.
For example:
If Mary has a tattoo on her body, her mother will be unhappy.
There is a possibility.
If Mary had a tattoo on her body, her mother would be unhappy.
Mary does not have a tattoo on her body, it is unlike to happen.
- ___________________________________________
- ______________________________________
Step 3,
Practice:
Activity 1:
After
Reading the text, you should write a text using the second and first
conditional where you give your opinion about the different lifestyles
discuss at the beginning of the activity. “Understanding
Body Language and Facial Expressions”, piercing and tattoos are a way of
expressing themselves. It
will be discussed at the synchronic meeting. For
example: If
people used facial expressions to communicate, those who listen to them would
be able to understand what they said. If
I had a tattoo on my skin, I would have more change to get an infection. |
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Step 4, Evaluation:
Activity 1.
This time, you are going to work with a classmate to interview each other or a member of your family, if you cannot participate in the synchronic meetings.
Taking into
account the topics studied in this period on the different lifestyles: Sports:
Extreme sports and common sports, Healthy tips: Eating and exercises
habits and Social practices: Piercing and body tattoos. Their pros and
cons, I invite you to interview a person.
You will be able to find out the point of view of a person about the following statement:
IF YOU
HAD A BALANCED LIFE, YOUR MIND WOULD BE BETTER.
Tips to do the interview:
In order to
write your interview and answering the interview you need to do the following
things:
1. Read all
the information you received in the guide and at the English´s synchronic meetings.
2.When writing, use all the grammar you have seen till now.
3.Organize your ideas according to what you think and understand about the subject in discussion to write the questions, these should have coherence
4.Prepare
the questions you are going to ask.
For example:
·
If
you had practiced common or extreme sports in the past, would you be able to
have a balanced life now? Explain, why yes or why not.
·
If
you had had an opportunity would you do some tattoos on your skin? Why you say
yes or why you say not or I do not know.
·
Do
you think that doing a tattoo or piercing on your skin, would help you to have
a balanced life? Explain why you say yes or why you say no.
·
If
you had chosen to do some healthy options, would you be able to have a balanced
life now? Explain why you say yes or why you say not.
·
Do
you think that if you have a balanced life it would help you to get a better
mind? Explain your answer.
· please, tell me, what could you do to have a balanced life, and if could it help you to get a better mind?
5. When answering the questions, you need to justify your points of views with real arguments.
For example:
Piercing
the body is not as simple as it sounds. This practice can be dangerous
because the skin is open and can become infected. I
agree because I know some people who had skin problems at the time they got
the piercing. It
seems to me that this is not a healthy practice since it could affect
physical health, which would impact the balance of our lives and cause
stress. People
should be aware of what they are doing to maintain a balanced life and ensure
a better mind. |
Finally,
you need to write the script of the interview.
Sent the
script and a video about one of the interviews you did to your teacher, if you
cannot participate at the synchronic meeting., d.ine.martha.mazuera@cali.edu.co

Read the following text and try to
understand it.
Path to Improved
Health
You can break down the concept of health into different categories. Now you will read two: physical and mental categories. There are things any person can do to stay healthy in these areas. But as a teenager, there are some things you should pay special attention to.
1 Physical health: Taking care of your body.
Exercise regularly. Teens should be physically active for at least 60 minutes every day.·
Eat a healthy diet. Healthy eating is an important part of
your growth and development. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, whole grains,
a variety of protein foods, and low-fat dairy products.
·
Maintain a healthy
weight: Be aware of the eating disorder, you need to prevent it as it can make you ill and
affect your physical and mental health. Some of the most common types of eating
disorders are:
- Anorexia. People with anorexia eat very little on purpose. This leads to a
very low body weight. have an intense fear of weight gain. They fear looking fat and have a distorted body image of themselves. They see themselves as fat even when they are very thin. People with anorexia are very strict about what and how much they will eat. They may think about food or calories almost all the time.
- Bulimia. People with bulimia overeat and feel out of control to stop. This is called binge eating. They do things to make up for overeating. After it, they may make themselves throw up on purpose.
This is called purging. They also prevent weight by using laxatives,
diuretics, fast, or exercise a lot. They judge themselves based on body shape and weight.
- Obesity: Children and teenagers with obesity are more likely to have obesity as an adult. They are also at higher risk for other chronic illnesses, depression, and bullying.
Get enough sleep. Most teens need between 9 and 9 ½ hours
of sleep every night. Many average only 7 hours. Sleep has a strong effect on
your ability to concentrate and do well at school.
· Keep up with vaccinations. Get a flu shot every year. If you
haven’t gotten the HPV vaccine, ask your parents and doctor about it. It can
prevent you from getting HPV and some kinds of cancer, including cervical
cancer.
· Brush and floss your teeth. Make it a habit now, and prevent tooth and gum problems in adulthood.
· Wear sunscreen. Getting just one bad sunburn as a child or teenager increases your risk
of getting skin cancer as an adult.
· Don’t listen to loud music. This can damage your hearing for the rest of your life.
2.Mental health: Taking care of your
mind
Learn ways to manage stress. You can’t avoid stress, so you need to
learn how to manage it. This will help you stay calm and be able to function in
stressful situations.
Study and do your best in school. There is a strong link between health
and academic success.
Try to maintain a good relationship
with your parents. Remember that they want what is best for you. Try to see where they are
coming from when they set rules.
Develop a good balance between school,
work, and social life.
Don’t try to take on
too much. Limit your
activities to the most important ones and give that 100%. Overextending
yourself can lead to stress, frustration, or exhaustion.
After
reading the text please create a bank word with the meaning of the unknown

PAST
PERFECT
The past perfect expresses the idea that something occurred before
another action in the past. It can also show that something happened before a
specific time in the past.
Here, we use the
past perfect to show that the first even finished before the second event
happened.
Mary had taken her food to her job to eat it there, last week, as the restaurant were closed due to the National March.
Mary is the Subject
Had is the verb have in past
Taken is the verb in the past participle.
It is important to review the regular and irregular verbs as the main issue to form the past perfect is to know the past and the past participle of the verbs.
Exercise 1.
Write a 3 lines paragraph about how ate last year. You need to use the past perfect.
Example:
I had not eaten
healthy food last year, because I did not have money at that time,
I had lost my job and it was difficult to live with little money. My cousin had helped me all the time, she gave me some money to buy the basic food every month

For example:
Eating disorders need to be prevented as they could affect people's physical and mental health performance.
Yes, I agree with it, because I understand that being tiny is not healthy and vomiting your food is not good for your digestive system and it makes you feel guilty.
1. ___________________________________________________________
2. ___________________________________________________________
3. ___________________________________________________________
Activity 2: Do you agree with these arguments? Please write why you said yes or no.
Subsequently, you
need to do a comparative table where you propose some changes that you would
make about your health, taking into account the two health tips recommended in
the text.
The table should be socialized in the synchronic meeting. It must be done in English.
For example:
Tip |
Before |
Proposal |
Physical health |
-I went to my bed at 4 AM. |
-I should sleep
8 hours. |
Mental health |
|
|
Activity 1: Form a group of students (3 to 4) to create a
healthy eating and exercise program to avoid some health problems like eating
disorders or anxiety aiming to keep a balanced life that helps to get a better
mind.
When writing the program's tips, you need to write using the past simple and past perfect.
Explain what care must be taken to have a balanced life, physically and mentally.
What can be the consequences of eating non-nutritious meals?
What would you say to people who care too much about their personal image, and think they are fat?
For example:
KEEP WELL ALL
THE TIME, START NOW If you had good health
habits, you should be healthier now! It doesn't matter if you have had physical or mental
health problems, what is important is that you are participating in this
eating and exercise program. It is about how to have a balanced lifestyle by improving your physical and mental health. 150 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise per week
(for example, 30 minutes on each of five days) or
75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity (or an equivalent- lent mix of the two). Two or more strength training sessions per week, with at least 48 hours in between to allow muscles to recover. Balance exercises for older adults at risk for falls. Start a planned meal program (we can help you to have your own personal eating healthy program). Check with your friends or family how you are eating,
if you eat a lot, it is not good for your health or if you eat too little it is not good as well because you could develop some eating disorders problems. You need to be honest and look for help. You need to sleep at least 6 hours if you are an adult but 9 hours is the best for adolescents. |
Activity 2.
After creating the Healthy eating and exercise program, you need to present the program to the class in a synchronic meeting.
You need to know how to introduce to the group when presenting the program, for instances
- Good afternoon, our
purpose today is…
- My group members are… and
- I am…
If you cannot
attend the synchronic meeting you need to explain it to the members of your
family and record a video it while doing it. Then send the video to the teacher.
En esta oportunidad usted presentara la tarea en el encuentro sincrónico o en la clase, sino puede participar debe enviar el audio de la canción al correo electrónico: d.ine.martha.mazuera@cali.edu.co.

SPORTS Nowadays sports play an important role in people's lifestyles. For children, playing sports can help develop friendships centered on healthy, safe and enjoyable activities, good self-esteem, endurance, and perseverance. Adults who play sports also have the opportunity to develop friendships centered around an active lifestyle. At this opportunity, you will read a text about some famous Colombian
sports players. Currently, the Colombian sport is well recognized around the world. It is the fruit of an effort that required several years. We introduce some of the athletes who, long before Mariana Pajón and James Rodríguez, had the world’s eyes focusing on Colombia. In the history of the Colombian sport, it is difficult to forget feats such as the medal of the fellow paisa Ximena Restrepo at the Olympic Games in Barcelona or Lucho Herrera's victory in the Vuelta a España. Long before the name of our national athletes occupied the front pages of the newspapers all over the world, these heroes achieved, with effort and dedication, some of the most memorable victories of the national sport. Today we want the world to recognize those athletes who paved the way
for Falcao, Catherine Ibargüen, Nairo Quintana, Mariana Pajón and all the
representatives who each day continue to add victories and fill the country
with pride. 6. Helmut Bellingrodt Colombia’s first Olympic medal was obtained by this Barranquillero sportsman of German descent, in the Munich Games, in 1972. In addition to
obtaining silver in the moving target, repeated the Olympic medal in Los
Angeles, 1984. Bellingrodt and Jackeline Rentería (bronze in Beijing 2008 and
London 2012) is the only Colombian sportspeople who have ever stood at the podium at the Olympics in two different games. 1. Ximena Restrepo This paisa woman made the 1992 Barcelona Olympics a memorable moment
for the country thanks to the bronze medal obtained in the 400 m athletics
race. Despite making history in these games, Ximena had already participated in the Olympics in Seoul in 1988. Throughout her career as an athlete, she went on to win the Ibero-American Championships in Havana (1986), the South
American Championships in Quito and Santiago de Chile, and the Junior World
Championships in Greece. 2. Miguel “Happy” Lora “Happy”, as he is popularly known, was the first Colombian to become bantamweight boxing champion in 1985 and went on to retain his title for three years. During the time of his reign, he has considered one of the best fighters in the world thanks to his reflexes, his ducking and weaving, and the accuracy with which he hit his opponents. This Monteriano was chosen as
Sportsman of the Year in Colombia exactly a year after his world title. His name is part of the history of Colombian boxing. Adapted from:

STEP 1 EXPLORATION
Last time, you learn the conditional 1 and you did some practice.
This week, you will review the first and second conditional.
1.1 El siguiente texto se relaciona con los efectos de la música en el ánimo de los seres humanos. Busca las palabras desconocidas y trata de comprender su sentido.
"Music is the most direct art, it enters through the ear and goes to the heart" Music is one of the fundamental tools that human beings use, and it is scientifically proven that it has direct influences on mood and quality of life. The rhythm of the song is related to muscle activation and / or relaxation, causing motor inhibition and a feeling of peace in the case of slow rhythms, and motor activation and externalization of feelings in the case of fast rhythms Music is therefore a fundamental stimulus in the life of human beings, it entertains us, amuses us, distracts us, helps us face problems, stimulates the senses, motivates us, inspires us, relaxes us ... in short, it has the power to elevate moods above worries. Tomado y adaptado: Mercedes Castillo Chinchilla

Exercise:
You need to write two sentences using the zero and first conditional, where you explain what the above text means for you.
For
example:
1. If you are
listen music, it will help you to relax.
2. If you listen music, you can entertain.

STEP
2 CONCEPTUALIZATION
GRAMMAR CORNER:
Zero
conditional
DIFERENCIAS
Zero:
If you sit in the sun for too long, you get sunburnt. — Si te quedas al sol
mucho rato, te quemas.
First: If you sit in the sun for too long, you will get
sunburnt.
If you heat water to 100 degrees, it boils. (Si calientas agua a 100 grados, hierve)
If public transport is efficient, people stop using
their cars. (Si el transporte
público
es eficiente, la gente deja de usar sus autos)
If you cross the line, you are in our country. (Si cruzas la línea, estás en nuestro país)
If children study, then their parents are
happy. (Si los niños
estudian, sus padres son felices)
Plants die if they don’t get enough water. (Las plantas mueren si obtienen suficiente agua)
If you mix red and blue, you get purple. (Si mezclas rojo y azul, obtienes violeta)
Now you can read more examples:
If I have time, I’ll call you.
If she has enough money next year, she’ll buy a motorbike.
If I go to Paris, I’ll visit my friend John.
If the weather is good, we’ll go to the beach.
STEP 3 PRACTICE:
Activity:1
Escucha
la siguiente canción:
Activity:2
actividad: "Music is
the most direct art, it enters through the ear and goes to the heart"
2.Organizar las ideas de acuerdo a su
realidad.
3. Usar los tiempos vistos y los
condicionales.
4. Debe tener coherencia y cohesión.
5. Mostrar toda su creatividad.
PERSONAL REFLEXION

they are too strict, they never accept my opinion. I think they are old-fashioned. During the week, I almost never see my father, and my mother is always busy. They are too worried about their jobs and the only thing that matters to them is my marks at the end of the term. |
My
family is really great. My parents and my brother are very understanding and are always there when I need them, they are my best friend so when I have a
problem they are my advisers. We talk about everything, and there are no taboos among us. At weekends, we spend a lot of time together. I like
