Grammar club:

What is a gerund?

A gerund is a noun made from a verb. To make a gerund, you add "ing" to the verb.

For example:

In the sentence "I swim every day", the word "swim" is a verb.

In the sentence "I like swimming", the word "swimming" is a noun.

Therefore, "swimming" is a gerund.

In the sentence "She reads several books a week", the word "read" is a verb.

In the sentence "Reading is important", the word "reading" is a noun. Therefore, "reading" is a gerund.

Some more examples of gerunds:

buying, fishing, running, watching, telling, and so forth.

The word "gerund" actually comes from the Latin word gerere, which means "do".

You could say this actually makes sense: the gerund describes an action, something you do.

Gerunds are often used when actions are real or completed.

The following table contains a summary of the gerund topic, please read it for you to consolidate the knowledge you get on the subject after watching the explanation about the gerund in the video.

Forms of Gerund

1.    As a subject of the sentences examples:

a. Running is a lot of fun when you are stressed.   b.  Smoking is prohibited in the airport.                                       

c. Swimming is a very healthy exercise.

2.    It is used with patterns verbs: likelovehate, and enjoy.

Examples: I like running in the park. (Like + gerund) b. She enjoys watching horror films. (Enjoy + gerund)

They hate going to the dentist. (Hate + gerund)

3.  The gerund as a complement of the subject Examples:

a. The worst thing about winter is not seeing the sun. 

b. One of my biggest dreams has always been traveling to Japan.

4.    Gerund after preposition examples:

a. He fell asleep after watching the movie. b. She felt bad for buying too many things. 

I’m interested in learning Russian.

5.    Gerund after some expressions. Examples:

a. She can’t stand listening to classical music. 

b. The teachers couldn’t help feeling pity for the student.

c. I don’t mind working on Saturdays.

6.    Gerund is used continuous tenses. Examples:

a. She is working at the airport b. They were eating delicious food

c. I have been watching videos all morning.

Evaluation:

Form a group of students (3 to 4) to analyze a video about the advantages and disadvantages of technology nowadays.

You need to value if the use of technology has been the best thing for the wellbeing of human beings? And writing a letter to an influential organization asking for help, to minimize the bad impact (if there is one) that the technology is producing on the community. You need to present to the class.

·         After watching the video, it is advisable to discuss and write down the advantages and disadvantages of the Technology

·         The group needs to name five advantages and five disadvantages of the technology and explain each of them.

·         The group needs to choose a disadvantage of a specific type of technology and thinking what can be done to minimize the bad impact that the technology is causing to this specific sector, for example, you need to choose a disadvantage, such as, the world pollution, or something else.

·         After choosing the disadvantage, you need to find out which is the best organization to contact to ask for help to minimize the bad impact on people’s lives and the environment.

·         Write a letter to the organization you chose, and then do your presentation.

·         You need to do the presentation to the group as if they were the members of the organization you contacted by letter.

You need to explain:

The problem (disadvantage), That is affecting your community due to that the local factory is using new technology.

 why you are asking them to support your group.

The plan you have is to minimize the bad impact that the technology used by the factory is causing to the community.

My opinion is that I am not sure about the fact, if the technology is the best thing for the world, as U believe that it is good for the human progress but on the other hand, it is true that the use of technology in different situations is not good, for instances, the internet is an open box where children are exposed to cyberbullying or adults can be a fraud.

If you cannot attend the synchronic meeting you need to explain it to the members of your family and record it while doing it.

we can describe technology as products and processes used to simplify our daily lives. We use technology to extend our abilities, making people the most crucial part of any technological system.

Technology is also an application of science used to solve problems. But it is vital to know that technology and science are different subjects which work hand-in-hand to accomplish specific tasks or solve problems.

We apply technology in almost everything we do in our daily lives; we use technology at work, we use technology for communication, transportation, learning, manufacturing, securing data, scaling businesses and so much more.  Technology is human knowledge that involves tools, materials, and systems. The application of technology typically results in products. If technology is well applied, it benefits humans, but the opposite is true if used for malicious reasons.

Technology is dynamic; it keeps on improving because our needs and demands for technology keep on changing.  We have moved from the industrial age (industrial revolution) to an information age. During the industrial age, companies with large sums of capital had the potential of employing expensive technological tools to gain the competitive advantage; small businesses had less potential because they could not afford expensive manufacturing or processing technology tools.

However, advancement in technology has created a new economic environment that depends on information, and that is what we call the ‘’INFORMATION AGE’’. The information age provides a different work environment, and this has helped small businesses gain a position in highly competitive markets.

The present perfect is a verb tense that is used to show that an action has taken place once or many times before now.

PRESENT PERFECT

The present perfect is a verb tense that is used to show that an action has taken place once or many times before now. As it is shown below.


 How the present perfect is formed?

Subject + have/has + main verb (past participle)                                         

The past participle of some verbs:

Example: The technology has used all the scientific information to develop the latest devices.

When do we use the present perfect:

We use the present perfect to say that an action happened at an unspecified time before now.

The exact time is not important. We CAN use the present perfect with unspecific expressions such as:

 ever, never, once, many times, several times, before, so far, already, yet, etc.

There are basically three situations that we use present perfect. It is always used to talk about an action or

event in the past that has some kind of connection to now.

1.    To talk about life experience (I have the memory now)

I have been to Paris.

I have never drunk whisky.  

2.    Action/ event is still true now

The technology has existed since ancient times.

People has watched TV since it was discovered.

3.    The result of the action is important or clear now

The technology has improved the small business earnings.

The boy has broken his arm

The Gamers

Once two boys named Alex and Jack both loved playing Call of Duty. One day they were playing it so much that they didn’t notice a strong force pushing them towards the TV screen…

Suddenly they found themselves in a large room full of people and deadly weapons. Then it hit them they had been sucked into a game but not just any game Call of Duty. Then a tall man came up to them and said, “Gear up boys”. They did as they were told and geared up. Alex chose two laser blasters and a sword; Jack took a grenade gun and a rocket launcher. The doors to the arena opened and they were ready for it.

Soldier after soldier streamed out of the iron gates like a river going downhill. There were already people in the arena that Alex and Jack thought were the other team. The arena was full of buildings and shelters. In the middle of the arena, there was a giant countdown to zero. When it hit zero Alex and Jack ran to the nearest fort where they defended for the whole game! Their team won.

Now Alex and Jackson knew they had to figure how to get home. They tried to remember what happened when they were playing but all they could remember was a strong force pushing them forward.

A few years had passed now and the boys were helping an injured soldier “We need to get him to a medic!” said Alex. But then the game ended and they went to their room in the building. In their room, they had countless medals and trophies but in the middle of the room, there was something different. It was a purple light that looked like a portal but after a few seconds, they saw shadows appearing. The shadows suddenly turned into zombies… 
They only just destroyed the zombies before they got to the central arena so their guards were very surprised when they saw the zombies. On the 12th of November the boys got so curious that they found themselves planning to go into the portal.

One night they met in the corridor and headed towards the now-called portal room. They met a guard along the way he got very curious so they Tasered him when they got to the room it seemed as though the moon was shining straight onto the portal. They counted down” 3,2,1,” and they jumped in.

After reading the test you need to understand and answer the following questions about the text:

People use Piercing and tattoos as another way to express themselves It seems that as many young adults are getting older, they're having a greater need to express their individuality and to show who they really are. Moreover, piercings and tattoos have been around for thousands of years now, being used to express religion by patterns and symbols.

Much alike, people get tattoos that express their interests by getting quotes from their favorite songs, a movement that has been important (such as Me-too) and many other things. Piercings, like tattoos, can be plain, dainty, bold or eye-catching; there are many types of piercings and each of those piercings have different names and has a distinctive style of jewelry. Virtually everyone is able to get a piercing in any place that they would like in any placement, though some hurt more than others (of course)

A tattoo is a permanent mark or design made on your skin with pigments inserted through pricks into the skin's top layer. Typically, the tattoo artist uses a hand-held machine that acts much like a sewing machine, with one or more needles piercing the skin repeatedly. With every puncture, the needles insert tiny ink droplets.

The process — which is done without anesthetics — causes a small amount of bleeding and slight to potentially significant pain. And it could cause some health problems such as allergic reactions, skin infections, bloodborne diseases like hepatitis B and C among others.

Piercings might be more common than ever, but don't take piercing lightly. Potential risks and complications include: allergic reactions, skin infections and scars, as well as keloids, which are an overgrowth of scar tissue, bloodborne diseases and tearing or trauma or specific to the tongue piercing, damage to teeth and gums, and difficulty chewing, swallowing and breathing

Activity 1.

This time, you are going to work with a classmate to interview each other or a member of your family, if you cannot participate in the synchronic meetings.

Taking into account the topics studied in this period on the different lifestyles: Sports: Extreme sports and common sports, Healthy tips: Eating and exercises habits and Social practices: Piercing and body tattoos. Their pros and cons, I invite you to interview a person.

You will be able to find out the point of view of a person about the following statement:

IF YOU HAD A BALANCED LIFE, YOUR MIND WOULD BE BETTER.  

Tips to do the interview:

In order to write your interview and answering the interview you need to do the following things:

1. Read all the information you received in the guide and at the English´s synchronic meetings.

2.When writing, use all the grammar you have seen till now. 

3.Organize your ideas according to what you think and understand about the subject in discussion to write the questions, these should have coherence

4.Prepare the questions you are going to ask.

For example:

·         If you had practiced common or extreme sports in the past, would you be able to have a balanced life now? Explain, why yes or why not.

·         If you had had an opportunity would you do some tattoos on your skin? Why you say yes or why you say not or I do not know.

·         Do you think that doing a tattoo or piercing on your skin, would help you to have a balanced life? Explain why you say yes or why you say no.

·         If you had chosen to do some healthy options, would you be able to have a balanced life now? Explain why you say yes or why you say not.

·         Do you think that if you have a balanced life it would help you to get a better mind? Explain your answer.

·         please, tell me, what could you do to have a balanced life, and if could it help you to get a better mind?

5.    When answering the questions, you need to justify your points of views with real arguments.

For example:

Piercing the body is not as simple as it sounds. This practice can be dangerous because the skin is open and can become infected.

 

I agree because I know some people who had skin problems at the time they got the piercing.

It seems to me that this is not a healthy practice since it could affect physical health, which would impact the balance of our lives and cause stress.

 

People should be aware of what they are doing to maintain a balanced life and ensure a better mind.

 Finally, you need to write the script of the interview.

Path to Improved Health

You can break down the concept of health into different categories. Now you will read two: physical and mental categories. There are things any person can do to stay healthy in these areas. But as a teenager, there are some things you should pay special attention to.

1      Physical health: Taking care of your body.       

Exercise regularly. Teens should be physically active for at least 60 minutes every day.·    

      Eat a healthy diet. Healthy eating is an important part of your growth and development. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, a variety of protein foods, and low-fat dairy products.

·       Maintain a healthy weight: Be aware of the eating disorder, you need to prevent it as it can make you ill and affect your physical and mental health. Some of the most common types of eating disorders are:

  • Anorexia. People with anorexia eat very little on purpose. This leads to a very low body weight. have an intense fear of weight gain. They fear looking fat and have a distorted body image of themselves. They see themselves as fat even when they are very thin. People with anorexia are very strict about what and how much they will eat. They may think about food or calories almost all the time.
  • Bulimia. People with bulimia overeat and feel out of control to stop. This is called binge eating. They do things to make up for overeating. After it, they may make themselves throw up on purpose. This is called purging. They also prevent weight by using laxatives, diuretics, fast, or exercise a lot. Nowadays sports play an important role in people's lifestyles. For children, playing sports can help develop friendships centered on healthy, safe and enjoyable activities, good self-esteem, endurance, and perseverance. Adults who play sports also have the opportunity to develop friendships centered around an active lifestyle.

At this opportunity, you will read a text about some famous Colombian sports players.

Currently, the Colombian sport is well recognized around the world. It is the fruit of an effort that required several years. We introduce some of the athletes who, long before Mariana Pajón and James Rodríguez, had the world’s eyes focusing on Colombia.

In the history of the Colombian sport, it is difficult to forget feats such as the medal of the fellow paisa Ximena Restrepo at the Olympic Games in Barcelona or Lucho Herrera's victory in the Vuelta a España. 6. Helmut Bellingrodt

Colombia’s first Olympic medal was obtained by this Barranquillero sportsman of German descent, in the Munich Games, in 1972. DIFERENCIAS CON EL PRIMER CONDICIONAL

Se puede decir que la principal diferencia entre el ZERO y el FIRST CONDITIONAL es que el zero se usa para hablar de generalidades, creencias y verdades universales, mientras que el first se usa para hablar de situaciones concretas muy probables. Ahora observe el siguiente ejemplo:

Zero: If you sit in the sun for too long, you get sunburnt. — Si te quedas al sol mucho rato, te quemas.

First: If you sit in the sun for too long, you will get sunburnt. — Si te quedas al sol mucho rato, te vas a quemar.

Puede verse que, en el primer ejemplo, se habla de algo que ocurre en general. En el segundo, se refiere a una persona, se menciona un caso en particular. Una manera de saber la diferencia es preguntarse si se está hablando en general o de un caso concreto.

6.          Ensure characters use their own voice

7.          Add intrigue

Activity:

Now you can create a short dialogue. You can ask questions

About the two sets of pictures, you observe at the exploration step.

 You can use the following questions to make the dialogue /if you want/:

This activity will be presented at the synchronic meeting on March 26th. If you do not participate in this meeting you have to record it and send it to your teacher by March 26th.  

Step 4 Evaluation: Challenge of the month.

Activity:

You need to create a group of 3 or 4 students to work together to produce a dialogue, where you can express your opinion about intra- family problems. After creating the dialogue, you need to record it and send it to your teacher.

For example:

Mom: I have to buy the food for the lunch

Dad: I don´t have money, you must get it.

Mom: but I don´t work, it´s your duty.

Dad: What does happen to you? I´m very tired. Your duty is to help me.

Daughter: Please don´t scream. (The girl cries)

Mom: I´m sorry but I can´t stand this situation. It´s horrible.

Dad: I can´t stand it either. I´m very angry.

Mom: I don´t accept your behavior and your bad treatments. You must respect me.

Dad: Sorry, you are right. Forgive me, please.

Tips to make the dialogue:

1.    Each sentence must have coherence:

2.    At least, It must have three characters

3.    Try to write about personal situations or situations that you know have happened to other people.

4.    You need to practice the dialogue several times until you feel it is good to record and send to your teacher.

STEP 1 EXPLORATION

Read the text about the problems of adolescents:


Three stages of adolescence are mainly recognized, named: Early adolescence, Middle adolescence, late adolescence. 
Different developments take places the origin in each state, at as more each state one

by one.

Early adolescence ranges from 12 to 13 years. During this stage a lot of hormonal and

physical changes take place concerns regarding one´s body image start to the surface during this stage. The teens begin to get uncomfortable around their parents and start going out more and seek new friends. They have a tendency to engage in risky endeavors. They have a tendency to tighten same-sex friends and distance themselves from the opposite sex as they from to have averse or confusing feelings about them.

Middle adolescence ranges from 14 and 17 years. During this stage, the teens distance themselves all the more from their parents. They begin to feel their parents cut off their independence and start revolting against them. Most teens would have puberty fully in this stage and new body image and beauty becomes all more important to them. This also the stage when their aversion to the opposite sex starts deteriorating and more of and interest starts building.

Late adolescence ranges from 17 and 21 years. During this stage emotional social and intellectual development starts and progresses steeply. By now physical development would have more or less reached a peak. Also, interest and intimacy towards the opposite sex become much more pronounced. The teens slowly transform into adults in this stage and thereby become more concerned with what they want to do with their lives. They start thinking about the careers they need to take up.

I don´t have a good relationship with my parents, they are too strict, they never accept my opinion. I think they are old-fashioned. During the week, I almost never see my father, and my mother is always busy. They don´t listen to my problems, they simply don´t have the time or the will to do so. They are too worried about their jobs and the only thing that matters to them is my marks at the end of the term.


My family is really great. My parents and my brother are very understanding and are always there when I need them, they are my best friend so when I have a problem they are my advisers. We talk about everything, and there are no taboos among us.

At weekends, we spend a lot of time together. I like discussing football with my father, he´s an expert on the matter.
